Is Jack Hamill’s music nostalgic? Maybe. I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that it must be, though, if you walked into Jack’s basement studio. That’s where I am now, having just followed Jack into the space where he brings most of his music to life.
I’m surrounded by the smell of old vinyl and an array of recording devices whose uses I can’t even begin to decipher. It’s hard not to feel wistful here, especially as Jack sits with a vintage Telecaster, strumming and humming to the tune of “The Wind Cries Mary.”

Jack Hamill’s own music evokes a certain nostalgia for Hendrix. For Dylan, too, and for a whole lineage of singer-songwriters in which Jack is more than well-versed. Yet, while the influence of the past can be richly felt in Jack’s music, it is Jack’s own presence that shines through the songs he crafts in his studio. It is here, among the wires, drums, keyboards and guitars where Jack will get to work, slowly piecing together his songs from the lyrical ruminations scrawled out in his notebook. He has a new album coming out soon, and a lot of shows coming up, so maybe check him out and hear what’s coming out of his basement
