May 19, 2023: Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Jack Hamill returns with his new single, “Double Exposure”. This song follows his previous release, “I Remember When”, in the rollout of his new album.
Jack had barely ever picked up a guitar before he was gifted one by his parents as a high school graduation present. For the next few years, he pursued it as a passionate hobby while studying at the University of Georgia, but the instrument was never more than that until his father passed away suddenly 5 years ago. Thus began a journey to create art capable of healing his grief and honoring all that his dad gave him. His upcoming collection of songs, “I Wrote This Album Because I Love You” (IWTABILY), is his most mature work yet, recorded in Nashville, TN, at 4115 Studio, with Wirebird Productions.
“Double Exposure” is the 2nd single off this album, and gives a heavy dose of his Alt-Rock influences, such as Radiohead, The Pixies, and Nirvana . Using dense instrumentation and psychedelic imagery, the song divides itself into two parts, with the first putting the listener in an anticipatory and frustrated state of mind with heavy drums, distorted guitars, and Jack’s aggressive vocals. The second half of the song transitions and slowly devolves into a reflective, downtempo, and meandering composition, bringing itself and its audience to a disjointed end.
Jack explains the inspiration behind the track: “Double Exposure” is all about how impossible conveying our genuine self is online. The specific story of the song details a hinge date with a photographer in Chattanooga, TN, explaining the photography metaphors and turning the recording’s intensity into an almost absurdist statement. In the end, what seemed like a genuine romantic connection fizzled into nothing upon meeting in person. During my two hour drive home, I had some time to reflect on the divide between online personas and their real life counterparts, and thus “Double Exposure” was born.
